Place d’Aligre, Gaston Barret

Gaston Barret was a prolific engraver and illustrator who was highly active in the 1950s and who successfully benefited from the vogue for so-called "bibliophilic" illustrated books. With brio, he illustrated texts by Francis Carco, Colette, Alphonse Daudet, Maurice Genevoix, Pierre Mac Orlan, Marcel Pagnol, Louis Pergaud, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and Alain Fournier. Like André Dignimont, Gus Bofa, Jean-Gabriel Daragnès or Chas Laborde, who were also rejected by the upholders of the avant-garde, they have today been almost forgotten. Yet they remain surprisingly modern and often come over as the precursors of the great names of the cartoon world.
