The Cotton Club in Harlem, New York, 1938
This nightclub in Harlem had its glory days from 1923 to 1936. All the elites of New York City went to the Cotton Club to listen and dance to the rhythms of the greatest Jazz musicians: Duke Ellington its official conductor, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Josephine Baker, Cab Calloway or else Count Basie made the reputation of the Cotton Club. Among the regulars at the club were George Gershwin, Charlie Chaplin, Fred Astaire, Samuel Goldwyn, May West and Judy Garland. Respecting to the letter the conventions of the time, the club was for a long time reserved to a white clientele and forbidden to black audiences.
