Venetian Canal, John Singer Sargent
John Singer Sargent, an American painter who lived mainly in Europe, studied at the École des Beaux-arts of Paris in the 1880s. Like Giovanni Boldini, he soon became the most prominent fashionable portraitist in Paris and also in London. His exceptional gifts allowed him to explore another field: watercolours. Sargent often stayed in Venice and grasped the particularities and special light of the City of the Doges. Along with Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth, Sargent is one of the greatest American watercolourists.
