Venice, La Guidecca, Henri-Edmond Cross

Henri-Edmond Cross, little known to the general public, but admired in his day by an entire intellectual and artistic circle, was part of the group of neo-impressionists and its flagship painter Georges Seurat. Cross discovered the city of the Doges in July 1903. He wandered across the town and its lagoon, carrying only a sketch-book and his watercolours. He brought back from his stay in Venice marvellous, fluid and vibrant watercolours with tones that are almost fauve.
