Henri Rivière was a main player in the renewal of colour stamps during the 1890s. His wood-engravings, brought together in two series – The Sea, Studies of Waves, and Breton Landscapes – stand as the most innovative part of his work. These genuine masterpieces are the fruit of experimental quests into Japanese-style wood engravings. Only published in twenty copies, and thus becoming the artist's rarest and most sought-after works, they offer both a poetic and synthetic vision of Breton coastlines.
