Harper’s Bazar, cover February 1928, Erté
Born in 1892 into an aristocratic Russian family, Erté experienced a golden childhood and the last splendours of Tsarist Russia. In 1912, he moved to Paris, frequented artistic circles, met the couturier Paul Poiret and became his assistant. In 1915, his sumptuous contract with the American magazine Harper's Bazaar, for which he delivered a cover every month for 22 years, propelled him to the rank of Art Deco icon. During his long career, a prolific artist and jack-of-all-trades, he moved from illustration to sculpture, from fashion drawings to theatre sets, from jewellery to music hall costumes.
