Paper cut-outs appeared late in Matisse's work. Physically diminished, this technique allows him to sit still while working.
The first step is to paint sheets of paper in bright colours and then cut them out with scissors and assemble them. Thanks to this technique of paper cut-outs, Matisse rediscovered the fluidity of brushes with simple scissors. Bright tones, contrasts and dancing forms make his compositions surprisingly bright and full of life: we are seduced by the apparent simplicity of his work.
