Paris, the Moulin Rouge, Mistinguett, 1926, Charles Gesmar

Commissioned in 1925 to design costumes and sets for the Moulin-Rouge, Charles Gesmar, who was only 25, worked wonders and helped restore the prestige of the most famous cabaret in the world, founded in 1899 by Joseph Oller and Charles Zidler. Mistinguett, the music-hall star who was very close to Gesmar and literally adopted him, gave him exclusive rights to design her costumes and advertising posters.
Dazzling comet in the world of show business, Gesmar revolutionised music-hall design in the 1920s: he died of lighthing pneumonia at the age of 27.
