Red Star Line Antwerp-New York, 1900, Henri Cassiers
Henri Cassiers was the painter of Flanders: he excelled in the depiction of the misty atmospheres of the North. James Ensor even described him as being the “Prince of Belgian watercolourists”. He was also a great specialist of sea posters. Alone in his era, he succeeded in imposing his style among the companies that entrusted him with their advertising. His drawings are clearly outlined, coloured with generous flat tints, the boats almost always seen from the side where the characters, often fishermen, are observing.
