Golden Pomacanth, The Vellums of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris
A unique artistic and scientific collection in the world, the vellum collection, with nearly 7000 paintings, is the major piece of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
Initiated around 1630 by Gaston d'Orléans, son of Henri IV and Catherine de Medici, the collection mainly includes representatives of the animal and plant kingdom. Nicolas Robert was the first great painter in a long list of artists: Claude Aubriet, Gérard van Spaendonck, Nicolas Maréchal, Pierre-Joseph Redouté and his brother Henri-Joseph, Léon de Wailly and in the twentieth century the talented Bernard Durin.
