The Louisiana Viper, Aloys Zötl

Between 1831 and 1837 in Upper Austria, Aloys Zötl, an obscure leather dyer, secretly drew in his spare time "the most sumptuous bestiary that has ever been seen", as André Breton described it when he discovered it in 1956, at an auction that dispersed most of his long-hidden watercolours.
