Created by Henri Desgranges and Léo Lefèvre, the Tour de France set off from Montgeron on 1 July 1903 in front of the café "Le Réveil Matin". It links the main French cities over a 2428 km route: Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes and Paris.
The finish in Ville-d'Avray, then later at the Parc des Princes, welcomed the first winner, Maurice Garin. Launched for a single edition, the Tour de France has become much more than just a cycle race: it has become an object of national heritage, magnifying the history and geography of France every year.
