Vegetable Plants Plate n°23 – 1871, Album Vilmorin

Philippe de Vilmorin (1872-1917) was to preside over the greatest period for the distribution of Maison Vilmorin-Andrieux, the producer of seeds and plants. At the end of the 19th century, the company published its splendid Album Vilmorin with 46 illustrated plates. Fifteen painters were employed by the enterprise to put together an agro-botanical, iconographic collection. Most of the artists had been trained at Paris’s Jardin des Plantes. In particular Elisa Champin who produced most of the finest plates. Such works do not just have an artistic interest, because they are still today precious sources for research into old varieties.
