Mount Fuji in clear weather, 1831, Hokusai

The most famous Japanese artist of Japanese printmaking in the Edo period (1600-1868), Katsushika Hokusai is the author of a world-famous work: The Great Wave of Kanagawa (circa 1830) which is part of the equally famous Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. Hokusai also became famous with his erotic or fantasy prints as well as his sketchbooks called "Hokusai manga".
The discovery of his prints was an aesthetic shock for European artists at the end of the nineteenth century.
