Spring Evening on Kintai Bridge, 1947, Kawase Hasui

Artist Kawase Hasui Heir to the landscape painters of the pictorial school of ukiyo-e, Kawase Hasui is one of the main representatives of a long tradition of Japanese print painters in the first half of thetwentieth century. With his "Twenty Views of Tokyo" and his "Selected Landscapes of the Tokaido", he follows in the footsteps of the painters of renowned sites in Japan, following the path traced by Hokusai (1760-1849) in his "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji" and by Hiroshige (1797-1858) in his "One Hundred Views of Edo". A tireless traveller and nature lover, Hasui faithfully reported on the monuments and regions of his country, mixing idealized nature with precise architectural forms. Hasui remains little known in Europe, where the history of Japanese printmaking has, for many collectors, stopped at the artists of the Edo period.
