Musée Grévin, Pantomimes lumineuses, Jules Chéret, 1892

At the end of the 19th century, a number of leading painters were among the poster artists: Toulouse-Lautrec, Manet, Bonnard and Steinlen. But it was Jules Chéret who came out on top. He was undoubtedly the inventor of the modern poster.

His style is easily recognisable, the main character being a cheerful, elegant woman in movement and bright colours. Nicknamed the Tiepolo of boulevards and the Watteau of crossroads, Jules Chéret's colossal output helped transform the urban landscape by bringing art to the streets.
