View of the banks of the Seine in Paris, Johan Barthold Jongkind

Artist Johan Barthold JongkindJohan Barthold Jongkind, a Dutch painter, moved to Paris in 1846 where he became Eugène Isabey’s student. He is now considered to be one of the precursors of impressionism. Claude Monet said of Jongkind: “I owe to him the education of my eyes” and in an interview in Le Temps of 26th November 1900, he called him “my true master”. His many watercolours are probably the most interesting part of his work.
