Twilight in Nihonbashi, 1940, Kawase Hasui — HAS01

Artist Kawase Hasui As the heir of the landscapists of the ukiyo-e pictorial school, Kawase Hasui is one of the main representatives of a long tradition of painters of Japanese stamps in the first half of the 20th century. By bringing together thematic groups of stamps, with "Twenty Views of Tokyo" or a "Selection of Stations of the Tokaido" he set himself in the tradition of painters of renowned sites in Japan, thus following the path traced out by Hokusai (1760-1849) in his "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji" or by Hiroshige (1797-1858) in his "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". A tireless traveller and nature-lover, Hasui faithfully rendered his country's sites and regions, mingling precise architectural forms with an idealised nature. Hasui remains unknown in Europe where the history of Japanese stamps, for many collectors, ceased with the artists of the Edo Era.
